Name Sisters

In Norway a special word exists for friends who have the same first name: navnsoster (name sisters). What a lovely concept! Do you have any name sisters?

I am very fortunate to have a very special name sister and we meet regularly. Same place, same time!  Busboys and Poets in Shirlington. It is a great tradition! Here we are at our latest rendezvous.

Victory Lunch DCDC

The DCDC celebrated Obama's victory by meeting at Mary's house for a residential rather than a restaurant lunch. Three of us were present. Unfortunately, Jodi and Synthia were unable to join us. As usual, stimulating conversation and delicious food.

Pizza Night

We invited our dear friends Larissa and Ivan to our home for pizza. We had a fun time! We are so glad that they have moved back to DC. In addition to the pizza, we enjoyed Panforte, an Italian dessert, and cocoa-dusted truffles from Belgium.

Women Who Rock

After my lovely lunch with Sonia and Nancy, I decided to go to the National Museum of Women in the Arts to see the Women Who Rock exhibit. It was very interesting. Andrea asked why I wanted to go. What do you know about this kind of music? I admitted knowing little about rock other than "Rock Around the Clock Tonight" but that is why I wanted to go - to stretch my mind, to widen my horizons.

This exhibit was divided into the following parts:

(1) The Foremothers/Roots of Rock (e.g. Ma Raine, Bessie Smith, and Mother Maybelle Carter)
(2) Rock and Roll Emerges (e.g. rhythm and blues: Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker and country/rockabilly: Wanda Jackson and Brenda Lee)
(3) The Early 1960's/Girl Groups (e.g. the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes)
(4) The Late 1960s (e.g. Janis Joplin, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, Loretta Lynn)
(5) The 1970s - Rockers to Disco Divas (e.g. Joan Jett and the Runaways, Heart and Fleetwood Mac, Donna Summer)
(6) Punk and Post Punk (e.g. Yoko Ono Lennon, Siouxsie Sioux, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Deborah Harry, Tina Weymouth, Kim Deal, Patti Smith, and Marianne Faithful)
(7) Madonna and the Pop Explosion (e.g. Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Sheila E., Shakira, and Janet Jackson)
(8) The '90s and the New Millennium (e.g. Bikini Kill, Meg White, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, Queen Latifah, Janelle Monae, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga)

Lunch at Le Pain Quotidien

 Chris, Sonia, and Nancy

We called it our Obama Victory Lunch but we really met because we wanted to get together. We hadn't seen each other since December 2011. How time flies - when you are busy!

We did, of course, spend time talking about politics. We are definitely all on the same page!

We had a nice time but it was too short because Sonia and Nancy both had to return to work. Ah! Maybe retirement isn't so bad after all.
